Food Data & Sources
Last updated October 3, 2026
Calio brings together public food catalogs and foods you enter yourself. The sources keep their own licenses. Calio does not claim ownership of their data, and our service terms do not restrict the rights those licenses give you.
Open Food Facts
Contains information from Open Food Facts, which is available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. Open Food Facts and its contributors maintain this community database of packaged foods. Individual database contents are available under the Database Contents License (DbCL) 1.0.
Calio uses Open Food Facts for barcode lookups and packaged-food searches, and caches the records it retrieves. We adapt names, nutrition fields, and serving information to Calio’s format. These adaptations may differ from the original product record. Open Food Facts-derived catalog data and our adaptations are licensed under ODbL 1.0.
Open Food Facts product photos have a separate Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license. Calio’s food lookup currently requests nutrition and product text, not these photos. Photos you take in Calio are separate from Open Food Facts images. See Open Food Facts’ terms of use and reuse.
Download Calio’s Open Food Facts data
Calio publishes its Open Food Facts-derived catalog as a free download, updated daily. It covers the cached product records along with their serving, alias, localization, and identifier records. You don’t need a Calio account.
Start with the latest manifest. It links to the newest file and gives its record count, size, SHA-256 checksum, and license links. Each file is gzipped JSON Lines, one food per line. The README describes every field. The latest seven daily files are kept.
Each file is a daily capture of a changing catalog. It is not a snapshot of the complete Open Food Facts database. It includes older cached records that may no longer appear in the app, marked as quarantined. It excludes your diary, private foods, photos, installation identifiers, and other operational data. For the full upstream database, use Open Food Facts’ data downloads.
USDA FoodData Central
Calio uses USDA FoodData Central for common foods and other nutrition records. FoodData Central data is in the public domain. Read USDA’s data documentation and download the datasets. Calio’s curated common foods are also based on USDA records.
Your foods and corrections
Foods, recipes, and private corrections you create are stored on your devices and, when enabled, in your private iCloud. Editing a food in Calio does not edit the upstream catalog. To correct an Open Food Facts product for everyone, find its barcode on Open Food Facts and contribute a correction there. For a Calio lookup or conversion issue, contact us with the barcode and the relevant label details.
Food records can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Check the packaging when accuracy matters, especially for allergens. Catalog data is not medical advice.
